In today’s Persefume‘s “He says, she says” column by Jakub and Aleksandra we are coming back to Beneath the Surface Collection by Slovakian house 1907. First creations of the line – Genevieve and Mon Ame stole our hearts already (read the review here) and now it is time to focus on the three newest additons: Dame d’Or, Nom and Belanelle.

All three creations joining Beneath the Surface Collection keep the exquisite style of the first two launches – they are available in pure Parfum concentrations (20% for Dame d’Or and Belanelle, 25% fof Nom), the outer packaging has been updated into luxurious case hand-made in local Slovakian factory by people with disabilities. That is definitely the example to follow!

Let us move to our dual reviews:

Emotions. Are timeless and are still with us. They build and destroy. In different forms they can be the driving engine and a brake. They can be our compass and element that sometimes we don’t know to control. They are like a golden stitch, that interweaves our lives. Emotion, lady in gold that is always with you. Perfume inspired by the painting of Gustav Klimt “Lady in Gold”, which he finished in 1907.

Floral, Aldehyde
Top Notes: Ylang Ylang, Bergamot orange, Aldehyde, Lemon
Middle Notes: Jasmine, Rose, Orange blossom, Clove, Cinnamon
Base Notes: Cedar wood, Sandalwood, Amber, Civet, Patchouli, Vanilla

He – The category is… opulence! Dame d’Or is older sister of Genevieve – it shares its soapy aldehydic and floral beauty, but presents it in even more mature way. Elegant, chic and nostalgic perfume – larger than life and with truly nuclear power. It touched me deeply.

She – Classic, aldehydic, chic. Theoretically something I would never wear, but not in the case of this phenomenal niche house, one of the few left in our over-commercialised world. This is a true gem, a diamond type of perfume – bright, sharp, elegant and brilliant. The initial burst of aldehydes is surprisingly soft, the ylang bouquet coming after that prelude – exquisite. Makes an impression of a golden nugget found amidst something much less shiny. Delightful perfume!

Each of us has in its life someone that is unique to us in some way. It is totally unimportant who the person is, and in what way is he exceptional. It is also unimportant in what role he appeared in our life. Simply his personality, opinion, attitude… has for us in some way an importance. For each of us this person has a name, a different face. Do you know the name?

Spicy, Amber, Animal
Top Notes: Lemon, Grapefruit, Orange
Middle Notes: Jasmine, Lavender, Nutmeg
Base Notes: White musk, Patchouli, Amber, Vanilla, Animal tones

He – The most masculine one, the only fragrance in the collection dedicated to men, though of course they all are totally unisex (I do not like phrase “gender neutral” btw). It reminds me of classic 1980s hits: heavy in patchouli, herbal and aromatic But somehow it does not feel sharp, or too outdated. Pure elegance, I am wearing it with confidence and pride.

She – The most “oriental” so far, Nom is an ode to patchouli. As always with this ingredient, the scent seems elegant and earthy at once, with a crisp bow to notes of lavender and nutmeg. This mixture, almost fresh, makes it unique in the category of patchouli scents. In time it gets so well blended that I detect nothing but cozy, soft-grained envelope of warmth on my skin. Another great perfume from the line.

Sometimes the beauty is a form and sometimes the content, sometimes the combination of both. Beauty is an article that we crave for. Beauty is something that exists within us and beyond us. Often, we are used to search for beauty beyond ourselves. We are like fireflies flying towards the light that ourselves can radiate.

Fruity, Floral, Musky
Top Notes: Bergamot, Orange, Pear, Apple
Middle Notes: Jasmine, Lily of the valley, Ylang Ylang, Orange blossom
Base Notes: Cedarwood, White musk, Amber, Sandalwood
Top Notes: Bergamot orange, Pear, Apple

He – The scent of youth: if Nom and Dame d’Or had a daughter it would be Belanelle! She is spontaneous, passionate, perhaps bit spoiled and rebel, but at the same time she is attending private lessons of French, ballet and savoir vivre. Bright, fruity, radiant, bit in vain of modern hits, yet far from banal. And that’s the sign of pure genius.

She – The only “modern” perfume in the line, approaching the theme of pear. And what a graceful approach it is! Rarely I’ve found fruits painted with such lightness and perfection, all in a nearly photographic, natural style. Not a trace of molecular approximations. Just a sun-bathed, transparent, almost watercolour garden of delights.

All scents are available as pure Perfumes in 50ml spray bottles each hand-blown by local artisans and in hand-made packaging. Retails include 1907 e-store and authorized stockists such as Essenza Nobile (Germany), Shy Mimosa Perfumery (UK) among others. Reccomended price: 180 EUR.
