There is no doubt that Mendittorosa – artistic fragrance house from Naples founded by charismatic Stefania Squeglia has been always so close to my heart. Therefore I am really touched to announce two new creations launching tomorrow at Esxence – The Scent of Excellence: Ithaka belonging to the signature Odori d’Anima Collection and Talento – the long-awaited 6th entry to the Talismans Collection of memorable Extraits de Parfum. Our Persefume is sharing the draft preview pictures and exclusive details of those two launches.

Ithaka (Odori d’Anima Collection) initates the new Versi Studio Trilogy: an olfactive study in three parts studying the relationship between poetry and perfumery. Ithaka Eau de Parfum is the first result of this Stefania’s research and has been inspired by the poem Ithaka written by Constantin Kafavis, and first published in 1911.

As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.

Hope your road is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you enter harbors you’re seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and go on learning from their scholars.

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.

Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you wouldn’t have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.

And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you’ll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.

To bring Ithaka‘s vision into the life, Stefania Squeglia has trusted in the completely new perfumer – member of the Flair Paris – house responsible for composition of most of the Mendittorsa’s creations (with the exception of Odori d’Anima Archetipo and Talismans Osang). Young and talented perfumer Camille Chemardin is currently attending the fourth year of perfume school and after three years internship at Flair she gained there the permanent position. Ithaka is therefore Camille’s first and truly independent niche entry.

Ithaka’s concept (above) has been illustrated by Massimo Alfaioli known from his lovely drawing for Talismans Sirio.

ITHAKA – the notes
Head Notes: Bergamot
Heart Notes: Aqueous Magnolia, Incense
Base Notes: Patchouli, Labdanum, Incense Resinoid, Virginian Cedar, Cypriol, Benzoin

We have asked Camille Chemardin about the inspiration behind creating Ithaka:

Ithaka represents Ithaca, the mythical city of Ulysses’ adventures. It is like a return to port with a starting more fresh at the sea. When the crew puts feet on the ground, the scent evolves and warms up and becomes rich with amber, vanilla and notes of incense, woods and gourmand undertones. Then we discover the richness of the Phoenician markets. To achieve it, I began by illustrating those Phoenician markets in smell with incense, patchouli, benzoin and sandalwood notes. Then the idea was to bring freshness from arrival to port with marine notes and wooden boat full of amber, gems and precious essences. It is an olfactory journey, a history of travels and discoveries!

Each flacon in the Versi trilogy will have a soft and hand cut wooden cap and a hand incised tablet with a symbol unique for each poem. For Ithaka it is a small boat in the sea. The flacon is housed as usual in the classical Odori d’Anima wooden box, inspired by iconic cases used for the protective shipping of sculptures and art works.

“Talent is a source always springing with new water.” – Ludwig Wittgenstein

Live always with Talent. Ask and receive advice from The Sixth Talisman.
What is this Talent?
It is the Talent we need to live. The Talent that will help us to achieve everything.
Our potential.
Our fortune.
A Talent to live.
This Talent can be delicate like a rose. Hidden and unnoticed without blooming as imagined.
If well protected however, Talent will bloom undisturbed.
The steadfast mint knows how to protect the rose.
Mint & Rose.
This are the soul of the Sixth Talisman.

Perfumers about Talento:

For Talento we worked around the idea of soft, gentle rose illustrating a form of fragility. This rose raises from the ashes and grows thanks to mint that acts as a form of panacea. This fragrance is therefore rosebud protected by geranium and fresh mint leaf.

Head Notes: Mint, Aldéhyde C12 MNA
Heart Notes: Rose Oxide, Infusion of Rose, Geranium
Base Notes: Indonesian Patchouli, Oakmoss, Cedar

The splendour of Talento perfume is housed in solid French flacons. The raku ceramic cap has been made as an abstraction of rose by Alessandro Reggioli, the Tuscan Artist, who has created all of the Talismans Collection adornments. From the neck flows a soft napolitan tapestry tassel. The originally designed jewel case is in striking black and silver.
